In a startling revelation, former interim federal minister Gohar Ejaz has exposed the excessively high costs of electricity for the public. According to Ejaz, electricity that should cost Rs. 35 per unit is being sold at a staggering Rs. 60 per unit.

Social Media Showdown: Ejaz vs. Leghari

This revelation has sparked a public confrontation on social media between Gohar Ejaz and the current Minister for Energy, Owais Leghari. Ejaz blames the Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements for the high costs and accuses the government of mismanagement.

Ejaz’s Critique: Government Incompetence

Gohar Ejaz criticized the government, stating that the production cost of electricity, including capacity charges and fuel costs, is Rs. 35 per unit. However, distribution companies are selling it at nearly double the price, Rs. 60 per unit. He further claimed that Rs. 2000 billion is wasted annually on IPPs, with this burden unfairly placed on the public.

Leghari’s Response: Defense and Clarification

Minister for Energy Owais Leghari dismissed Ejaz’s claims, labeling him as uninformed. Leghari explained that unilateral actions against IPP agreements are impossible due to state guarantees on these contracts. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to privatize loss-making power companies and institutions. Orders have been issued to review IPP agreements and conduct contract audits, aiming for a more sustainable energy sector.

High Electricity Prices: Public Burdened by Inflated Rates

This clash highlights the critical issue of electricity pricing and government accountability in managing the country’s power sector. As debates continue, the public remains burdened by the inflated costs of a basic necessity.
