Potential Reduction in Electricity Prices by 70 Paise Per Unit for November
In a move that could bring temporary relief to electricity consumers, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing today regarding a possible reduction in electricity tariffs. The proposal, submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), suggests a 70-paise reduction per unit for the monthly fuel adjustment for September.
The hearing, led by Nepra Chairman Waseem Mukhtar and other authority members, aims to review the fuel cost adjustments and will likely provide a one-month reduction in electricity rates, set to reflect in November electricity bills.
Expected Decrease in Petroleum Prices
Meanwhile, consumers could also benefit from a potential drop in petrol and diesel prices starting November 1. According to sources, petrol prices are expected to decrease by approximately 3 rupees per liter, while diesel prices may go down by 2 rupees and 30 paise per liter for the upcoming 15 days.
This expected reduction follows a recent dip in global fuel prices, where average petrol prices fell from $77.5 to $76 per barrel, and diesel dropped from $86.5 to $84 per barrel. The import premium on both petrol and diesel has remained stable at $8.7 and $5 per barrel, respectively, keeping costs within manageable levels.
Current Fuel Prices
As of now, the ex-depot price of petrol stands at Rs 247.03 per liter, while diesel is priced at Rs 251.29 per liter. If the proposed reductions are approved, they will offer some much-needed financial respite to consumers amid rising living costs.
