More Heavy Rains Expected in Karachi, Warns PMD
Following heavy rains in Karachi, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more thundershowers in the city over the next 24 hours.
Weather Update: What to Expect
The PMD has predicted heavy rain in some areas of Karachi, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26°C, with the maximum expected to range between 30°C and 32°C. Humidity levels are currently at 92%, and winds are blowing at a speed of 16 kilometers per hour.
PDMA’s Preparedness Efforts
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority’s (PDMA) Director General, Syed Salman Shah, assured that preparations for the rains had been reviewed. He stated that heavy machinery has been deployed in key areas to manage rainwater drainage, aiming to minimize the inconvenience to residents during the downpour.
Monsoon Spell: More Rain to Come
PMD Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has indicated that the peak of this monsoon spell is yet to come. He warned that more than 150 millimeters of rain could hit Karachi in the coming days, with the monsoon system expected to intensify after August 28. The city could see as much as 150-200 millimeters of rainfall during this period, with the possibility of wind thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls.
Risk of Urban Flooding
The PMD has also cautioned about the risk of urban flooding in Karachi and other metropolitan areas in Sindh due to the torrential downpours.
Rainfall Record in Karachi
In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadid (62mm), followed by Bin Qasim (44.2mm), Quaidabad (29mm), Surjani (19mm), and Korangi (18mm). Other areas like University Road, Keamari, DHA Phase 2, and Saddar also experienced significant rainfall.
Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this period of expected heavy rainfall.
