Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Urges India to Respect Sovereignty Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called on India to respect Canada’s sovereignty, expressing concern over actions he described as an attack on Canada’s integrity and a violation of international law. In a recent statement, Trudeau emphasized that Canada respects India’s sovereignty and expects the same in return.
Concerns Over Sikh Community Safety
Trudeau acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Canada and India but highlighted growing concerns within Canada’s Sikh community. He noted that many Sikhs in Canada are worried, angry, and distressed over recent incidents, stressing the need for all Canadians to feel safe in their country.
Call for Investigation and Cooperation
The Canadian Prime Minister pointed out the need to halt criminal acts that threaten public safety. He underscored the importance of not ignoring the evidence that has surfaced during the investigation into violent incidents against the Sikh community.
Trudeau revealed that Canada had requested India to lift the diplomatic immunity of six Indian officials stationed in Canada for the investigation, a request that India refused. Despite this, Trudeau continued to urge India to cooperate in the inquiry based on the investigation’s findings.
Global Diplomatic Efforts
The Canadian Prime Minister also mentioned that he had reached out to his counterparts in the UK, USA, Australia, and New Zealand to discuss the ongoing investigation. He confirmed that he had spoken with India’s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, and would persist in calling for India’s cooperation in resolving the situation.
Diplomatic Tensions Escalate
This diplomatic rift comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and India, with the Canadian government demanding accountability and transparency regarding incidents involving the Sikh community. Both nations are navigating sensitive issues that could potentially strain their historical ties further.
