Microsoft is set to launch a feature allowing Xbox users to purchase and play Xbox games directly from the Xbox Android app in the US, starting next month. This move comes after a US court ruling mandated Google to stop requiring developers to use Google Play Billing for apps distributed through the Play Store, effective from November 1.

Google Play Store’s Monopoly Challenged

The court’s decision, which follows complaints about Google’s monopolistic practices, requires the tech giant to open the Play Store to competition for three years. This means Google will have to allow third-party app stores and enable developers to bypass its in-house billing system, creating a significant shift in the app ecosystem.

Xbox’s New Opportunity

Following the court ruling, Xbox President Sarah Bond announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the court’s decision will give players “more choice and flexibility.” Bond further elaborated that starting in November, Xbox users will be able to purchase and play Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android, providing a new avenue for Xbox users to enjoy their games.

The Android app will also integrate Xbox Cloud Gaming features, allowing players to stream games on their mobile devices right after purchasing them, enhancing accessibility for gamers.

Microsoft’s Broader Plans for Mobile Gaming

In addition to its Android app update, Microsoft is reportedly developing a browser-based Xbox mobile store, which will feature games from Microsoft’s studios and offer deals and in-game items. This new store is expected to focus on first-party mobile games and offer a more streamlined experience for mobile gamers.

The court ruling and Microsoft’s subsequent plans mark a significant shift in the mobile gaming landscape, challenging Google’s dominance in the Play Store while offering Xbox users more convenient access to games.
