University of Karachi Approves Honorary PhD for Dr. Zakir Naik Amid Opposition

The University of Karachi has formally approved the awarding of an honorary PhD degree to renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik, following his visit to Pakistan. The decision was ratified during a meeting of the university’s Syndicate, presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Iraqi.
The nomination for Dr. Naik’s honorary degree was received via a letter from the Governor’s Secretariat on October 1. Despite the approval, the minutes from the meeting revealed opposition from three Syndicate members — Sadia Javed, Shahida Rahmani, and Sahibzada Moazzam Qureshi — who expressed reservations, particularly concerning Dr. Naik’s views on women.
Dr. Zakir Naik, an influential preacher known for his promotion of Islamic teachings worldwide, has been a controversial figure, with some supporting his contributions to religious education and others questioning his stance on various social issues.
The university’s decision to confer this degree has sparked debate, with the opposition members highlighting concerns about his ideological perspective, especially on gender-related matters.
