ECP Postpones Islamabad Local Government Elections Due to Amendments in Law

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the temporary postponement of the Islamabad Local Government Elections. This decision comes following amendments to the Islamabad Local Government Law, which have introduced complexities in the election process.
Formation of a Committee
The ECP has constituted a committee to review and implement the necessary changes in the law and rules. The committee will consist of:
- Secretary Interior
- Secretary Law
- Special Secretary
- Secretary Election Commission
The purpose of the committee is to address the amendments made to the law and ensure that future elections are conducted in accordance with the new regulations.
Meeting Highlights
An important meeting was convened by the ECP, attended by the Interior Secretary, Law Secretary, Election Commission officials, and key figures like the Chief Commissioner and DC Islamabad.
The Additional Home Secretary informed the meeting that amendments had been made to the Local Government Act, and a gazette notification had already been issued. These legal changes have resulted in delays, as the ECP must now restart the election process from the beginning, including the delimitation of constituencies.
The ECP’s statement clarified that these amendments have made it difficult to conduct the elections within the previously set timeframe, necessitating the postponement.
