PTI Rally Proceeds Despite NOC Cancellation; Schools Closed, Roads Blocked in Rawalpindi and Islamabad

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced its intention to hold a rally today, despite the district administration’s cancellation of the No Objection Certificate (NOC). This decision has led to widespread disruptions in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, including the closure of schools and major roads.

Roads Blocked and Schools Closed

Late last night, authorities began blocking all major roads leading to Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including the motorway, using containers and other barriers. As a result, the public has faced significant difficulties, with long queues of vehicles forming at various points. In response to the situation, schools in the twin cities have been closed today, with holidays declared for both public and private institutions.

Administration’s Concerns and Security Measures

The Rawalpindi district administration cited security concerns as the reason for canceling the rally’s NOC, particularly due to the ongoing Pak-Bangladesh Test series in Rawalpindi. The Punjab government also imposed Section 144 across the province, banning public gatherings, rallies, and sit-ins for three days starting today, August 22.

In anticipation of the rally, the Islamabad administration has sealed off the Red Zone and announced a holiday for schools on August 22. The Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad emphasized that the decision was made to ensure the safety of children.

Impact on Public Services

Public services have been severely affected. The metro bus service has been suspended for the day, and security at bus stations has been heightened. Despite the closures, the ongoing matric supplementary examination papers in Rawalpindi will proceed as scheduled, with six examination centers remaining operational.

Traffic Disruptions and Security Arrangements

Significant traffic disruptions have been reported, with key highways and routes being blocked by law enforcement. The central highways, including the GT Road near Sawan and Sixth Road, have been barricaded. The T Chowk Rawat, Faizabad, and other critical routes leading to Islamabad have also been sealed off.

Due to the roadblocks, government and educational institution vehicles have been forced to turn back. Despite these disruptions, the Pak-Bangladesh Test match is ongoing, with teams being transported to the stadium via alternative routes.
