Street Crimes Surge in Karachi: Over 44,000 Incidents in Seven Months

Karachi has seen a disturbing rise in street crimes during the first seven months of this year, with more than 44,000 criminal incidents reported, according to a recent report by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).
The CPLC report highlights alarming figures, with over 31,000 cases of motorcycle theft and snatching occurring across the metropolis. Additionally, more than 1,000 cars were stolen or snatched, and over 11,000 mobile phones were taken from unsuspecting residents. The city also witnessed 12 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 57 incidents of extortion.
Weekly Crime Report: Police Efforts in Karachi
A performance report released by Karachi’s Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Akhtar Odho detailed police actions over the past week. The report disclosed that 31 encounters between police and criminals took place, resulting in the deaths of three robbers and injuries to 34 others. These encounters led to the arrest of 50 suspects on the spot.
In total, the police arrested over 732 suspects throughout the week. Significant drug seizures were also made, including 107.83 kilograms of hashish and 1.16 grams of ice (crystal meth). The police recovered 108 different types of illegal weapons from the arrested individuals and took 29 motorcycles into custody.
The surge in street crimes has sparked concern among residents and law enforcement, highlighting the ongoing challenges in maintaining security in Pakistan’s largest city.
