PTI Conflicts Deepen as Sher Afzal Marwat Demands Shibli Faraz’s Resignation

Internal strife within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) continues to escalate as senior leader Sher Afzal Marwat calls for the resignation of Shibli Faraz from his party positions and as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Marwat insists that Faraz’s resignation is crucial for liberating the party from what he terms the “qabza mafia.”
Rising Internal Conflicts
Marwat’s demand follows the resignation of Omar Ayub as PTI Secretary General, indicating further changes in the party’s organizational structure. Ayub, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, stepped down on Thursday, signaling discontent within the party ranks.
Marwat’s Accusations
Marwat, who has clashed with Faraz and other PTI leaders, voiced his dissatisfaction by saying:
“I demand the resignation of Shibli Faraz from party positions and as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. The party will only be freed from the ‘qabza mafia’ after he tenders his resignation.”
He previously refused to collaborate with Faraz and Ayub, accusing them of preventing him from meeting imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan. Marwat’s criticisms follow the party’s decision to revoke his nomination for the chairmanship of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), favoring Sheikh Waqas Akram instead.
Party’s Response and Internal Dynamics
In response to Marwat’s outspoken criticism, PTI expelled him from its core and political committees and issued a show-cause notice for violating the party’s code of conduct. Marwat, however, continues to assert that the party’s leadership has repeatedly failed, citing issues with the party’s symbol and reserved seats. He claimed:
“The core committee and political committees of the party consist of the favorites, and the party decisions are not taken on merit.”
Marwat encouraged supporters to advocate for his demands, promising that the party would rise if Shibli Faraz is removed:
“If Shibli Faraz is removed [from PTI], then I promise the party will rise as per the need of the hour.”
Tug-of-War Within PTI
The resignation of Omar Ayub is perceived by insiders as part of a broader power struggle within PTI. This internal tug-of-war threatens the party’s unity both inside and outside Parliament. According to party sources, dissatisfaction stems from decisions regarding parliamentary posts, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet, and the composition of the core and political committees.
Insiders say:
- Sheharyar Afridi, a former minister, hinted at resigning if party affairs are not addressed, a sentiment echoed by at least 27 legislators.
- These legislators argue that parliamentary leaders and senior members have compromised efforts to campaign for Imran Khan’s release in favor of securing committee memberships and leadership positions.
Future Implications
The ongoing internal disputes within PTI signal potential shifts in party dynamics and leadership. The outcome of these conflicts will likely shape PTI’s approach and cohesion in navigating its political challenges and organizational reforms.
